Dragon Flame Steps

Ah, as requested and promised, here are some steps from the Dragon image.

1. Actually had the image in my mind first, so I simply put down what's in my head. I blocked in the shapes with very basic flat colors... Sky is Blue! Fire, Red! Grass, Green! All those Art Classes really paid off!

2. Filled in the rest of the image and started to add more lighting info. Also noticed a rhythm going on, and decided to reinforce that idea (indicated by red lines). The Verticals (people on horses) could contrast the Curves of the Dragon and Flames, reinforcing the story's Conflict.

3. From here on out it just became a matter of defining the forms and making sure the shapes actually read as the things I want to convey. Fixing silhouettes, proportions, gestures, etc. Decided on a Brown-ish Dragon because everyone knows Blue Dragons don't exist.

4. Looked at horses, indicating planes, rendering out different materials such as cloth, metal, skin, etc. Dropped in a photo of some random hills in the back. Got to keep in mind the scale of things. Making sure there is enough texture detail to describe how big something is.

5. A few Power Naps later, the image is done! Added Crispy Fried People in the flames for kicks and giggles. Pretended to shoot arrows from my desk to see how the archer should be drawn. Nothing much to speak of in terms of actual Creature Design, but I got to paint a Dragon so I'm a happy manchild.

I don't approach every image I do the same way. Sometimes I can see the image in my mind, and I simply draw it. Other times I have to search and search. Other times its more structured. I'm sure you do the same things.

Honestly for the Fantasy images 1 post down, they each started differently.  I'd be bored if I have to do paintings the same way each time.

Shameless Promotional Plug:
A more structured look and tutorial on my painting process can be found in BATTLEMiLK 2. Available everywhere DSP books are sold! Hahahahaha. You can check out my friends' art and tutorials too! Probably learn more from them.

Can't cover everything here on the blog, but I teach a Landscape Painting Class at CDA in Pasadena. Its Landscape Painting for Entertainment, so we do Entertainment work in the class as well. Come join me in Spring!

Jackson, out!

Landscape Painting Class Fall 2010

Hey Folks,

Its Fall and its time for landscape painting again. I'll be teaching the class at CDA on Sundays.

The Class is going to be slightly modified from the last time I taught it. There's going to be an emphasis on creating convincing colors out of your head off-site as well. This should help students apply color theory to their entertainment work.

Hope you can join me!

*Added some new pieces done over the weekend...

BATTLEMiLK 2

BATTLEMiLK 2 is almost here!

This is the reason for the general lack of Blog updates earlier this year. My friends and I have been busy working on this book for... what is it now... 2 years?

This time around, we've added Le Tang and David Le Merrer to the original 4 BATTLEMiLK artists.

Copies should be available at the Design Studio Press Booth come Comicon this July, and everywhere else where DSP books are sold.

I'll post some images from my section soon...Thanks for checking it out!

CS5 & Red Dead

If anyone were to ask you how awesome Red Dead Redemption is, the only appropriate response is: "It is perhaps too awesome, ma'am."

Also, finally onto CS5... Trying the new mixer brushes. What will Painter do now?!

Sci-Fi!

I hardly post anything Sci-Fi here... due to my day job being The Clone Wars for the last 2 years. Now that I'm out and about, its time to do some personal sci-fi work.

A lot of influences here... Star Trek, Mass Effect 2, Moon... even Star Tours!
Space, the final frontier! And all that good stuff...

Landscape Class Demos

These are some of the on location Demos I did this term.
Mostly I take around an hour in the beginning of class to show the students my process and or do a lecture...

Black & White, Limited Palette and towards the end, Full Color Palette.

Oh, and for those of you who may be enrolling in classes at Gnomon next term, just want to let you know that I will NOT be teaching the Environment Class . I know the schedule has my name on it... but that was a misprint... Sorry!

Also, no Landscape Class from me in the summer... too hot... will return in the Fall.

BATTLEMiLK2 is almost done! More info soon-ish...

Landscapezzzzzzzz...

Happy New Year Everybody!

Being a freelance artist has afforded me a lot more time to go landscape painting... and I really enjoy being outside as opposed to warming my hands on my Cintiq this winter...

I'm teaching a Landscape Painting Class at CDA in Spring, so I've been scouting locations and preparing my lesson plan. The class will be held in the tradition of the amazing Landscape Classes I took with Mike Hernandez and Robh Ruppel.

Thanks to them and other amazing teachers, I have cultivated a lifetime pursuit.

I hope to do these teachers justice with my class...
