Paint Sketch

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to attend a presentation of Dinotopia by the incredible Mr. James Gurney.

Wow.. such skill, passion, and dedication.. Amazing...

So inspiring was his work he got me to not watch tv tonight and paint something!
Cant decide who lives here... maybe dinosaurs... but I can't draw dinosaurs...

Merry Xmas everyone!

DS Painting

Ok ok, is it too late to jump onto the DS Painting bandwagon?!
Just got all the parts today and had to do a test run.

This is too fun.

Like Benjamin P. said, switching up media can help fuel inspiration.
Can't wait to take this baby out and do some actual DS Plein air...

Distractions and Inspirations

Sorry about the lack of updates.
Been having a hard time finding inspiration.

I must have a dozen or so "starts" of pieces that didn't interest me beyond the thumbnail phase. That, and the Fall TV season started! Wahaha.. what happened to Heroes?!

Thanks to Will for getting on my case about not posting! Finally made me sit down and paint something on Sunday.. Haha.

Painting Therapy

Was feeling kinda bummed out a couple of weeks ago.
I actually felt better after doing some landscape painting... how dorky is that!

Top one was done at work and the bottom one is from Fort Baker.
SF air is so clean everything looks blue and contrasty... sometimes things are so sharp and in focus me eyes hurt...

Ayala and the DreamCatchers III

And so the DreamCatcher set off on his hunt...

Sorry people, long time no blog. Super lazy lately...
Been practicing that whole "abstract staring contest thing" with Kinman.

Lake Anza

The fog rolled in just as I sat down to paint...
Then it got so cold we had to leave pretty quickly.

Ayala and the Dreamcatchers, II

I have bits and pieces of this story in my head.
The story grows from scenes I want to paint... that's probably not the right way to go about creating stories... but I just wanna paint some fun visuals.
Fun for me anyways...

Parking Lot View at the Wharf

Done on the roof of the Parking Lot at Pier 39. Forgot to put sunblock, so now half of my right arm is bronzed....

Shinto Priest

Here is tonight's random sketch.
Who murdered the Priest?

Argh Matey...

Random Sketch of the night. Started out as abstract blobs on a landscape format...
I should stick with environments.... *sob*

Trying it Out

Inspired to give Painter another try. I gave up a while ago when it took too long to do what I wanted.
I prefer its color mixing to Photoshop, feels more natural.
Used a lot of brushes with this piece, slightly out of control while painting it.

San Quentin

So I was heading for Sausalito, but decided to take a random exit right off the San Rafael Bridge and found a Prison!

There's a small stretch of houses facing the bay before you reach the prison. Found a cool spot to paint... I think I was actually on someone's private property when I did this...

Landscape painting is a great way to explore my new surroundings...

Driving Home from Work

On the Richmond Bridge at around 6:40pm...
Geography is wrong, I'll memorize it better next time...
Trying to memorize color and shapes while driving on wet bridge = major distraction.
4 days of rain coming?! Schweet!

Gotta go landscape painting more often, rust building up...

Moving...

Ah, its been too long since the last update. Sorry about that. Lots of stuff going on in my life at the moment...
I got a new gig and will be moving to San Francisco/Bay Area. I'm really looking forward to the new surroundings and working with some of my heroes...

That said, Sparkians, its been a real pleasure working with you guys. Keep pumping out those miracles! Its amazing what you guys are pulling off everyday with that insane schedule!
My friends & foes list is getting a little too long on the right there... so I've organized it according to how much I like the person (Sorry Will, I hate your guts).

Coincidentally, it came out in alphabetical order.

Oh, also, there's another jackson around the art blogs... so I'll be signing comments with me full name from now on.

Finally, I'm trying something new with this piece... pretty loose, I'd say, but super fun to do. I was fortunate enough to visit my friends Khang and Anthony over at Project Offset the other day, and I've been inspired by their talents all over again...

Man, packing sucks....

Paris

I was really inspired by the architecture in Paris...
Particularly the Notre Dame Cathedral. Painting the crowd was fun, no people brush!

Tired of the Wii

I have had terrible luck in finding a Wii since its release. This morning was the last time I would waste my time lining up for one. I'm guessing I will have to wait till March or April to find one readily available for purchase...

Anyways, thank you to all the well wishers from last post. I had a great time in Paris and am now addicted to travelling. Next up is Japan I hope!

This started out as a speed painting excercise... Cute furry animals are awesome as long as they don't sing in a movie...
